A little more about the history of our beautiful island

Isle-aux-Coudres, a small island that takes it easy in the middle of the majestic St. Lawrence River in Charlevoix, is a family destination, an invitation to get away from it all! It's 360° of landscapes to admire, horizons changing with the tides, breathtaking sunrises and sunsets. It's a breath of salt air and good wind, a road lined with wildflowers or icy flats. It's some 1400 "marsouins," a friendly nickname given to its inhabitants, who share their history, their passion, their know-how and who look forward to welcoming you!

Deeply rooted values

Since the first families to take root in 1720, generations of builders and pioneers have tamed the island with creativity, courage and pride. The first ferry arrived in 1930, and the winter ferry in 1959. It is therefore with ice canoes that the link with the continent has been maintained for a long time. Today, it is the sons and daughters of sailors, schooner builders and farmers who continue, reinvent and share their history!

Unexpected horizons

In 1963, filmmaker Pierre Perreault arrived on the Isle, to meet larger-than-life characters. The result was the "Isle-aux-Coudres Trilogy," a collection of three documentaries, the first of which, For the rest of the world, co-directed with Michel Brault, is considered a pioneering work of direct cinema, and a masterpiece of Quebec and Canadian cinema. Even today, the beautiful speeches of Grand Louis and Alexis color our culture!

Modern marsouins

Today, the island offers all the quality of life one would expect from our time, in a dreamlike environment. A primary and secondary school, a daycare center, and a multitude of varied professional and community services meet the needs of everyone from the youngest to the oldest. It's also a close-knit community that generously implements initiatives and committees to enhance our life here year-round. Don't be shy about approaching a "marsouin" during your visit; they're known for being very friendly!
